Proper Eats, a unique market and cafe', announced the grand opening of their business on May 13th, 2006 in the historic St. John's business district. The concept behind the new market is to bring locally grown, organic products to the greater North Portland Community. The market will feature fresh local produce, bulk items and a variety of other products. The cafe will feature vegetarian and vegan dining options that draw upon a number of cultural influences to create a one-of-a-kind dining experience.
The grand opening coincided with the celebration of the 44th annual St. John's Day Parade. "We wanted to build a business in our community that could positivly serve the needs of North Portland residents while helping to strengthen the local economy," says James Hayes, one of the owners of Proper Eats.
"We believe in the importance of supporting small, independent farmers, distributors, manufacturers and artisans, which are values that we believe are in sync with the St. John's community Spirit. We also believe in bringing the best quality food to our neighbors at a price that the average family can afford." Proper Eats will also be staying open late and serving beer and wine and will have extended hours to create an alternative late night option for those in the community. The owners of Proper Eats plan to make their market and cafe' a gathering place for the community, hosting events such as seed swaps and other events that promote healthy living, environmental stewardship and community developement. Local artists and musicians will be featured regularly at the cafe as well. |
